Cargill Recalls More Ground Beef

Cargill recalled ground beef in early October after reports of four Minnesota children becoming ill after eating the meat. They have now announced a new recall of over 1 million pounds of ground beef that was distributed in 10 states. The recalled meat may be contaminated with E. coli.

Cargill learned the meat may be contaminated after the Agriculture Department found a problem with a sample of the beef produced on Oct. 8, the company said. The bacteria is E. coli O157:H7.

A spokeswoman for Cargill said 10 states are included in the recall -- Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

E. coli bacteria can cause severe illness and even death if ingested. Bloody diarrhea and dehydration are two symptoms of E. coli. Those most at risk are the young, elderly and anyone with a suppressed immune system. It is always important to cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees to kill any E. coli bacteria.
