Woman Thrown Into Traffic on I-69 in Shakopee

Car accidents were avoided, but police are still searching for a man who threw a woman into oncoming traffic on Highway I-69 Monday night in an extreme case of road rage. Jennifer Boulden made a legal U-turn on Interstate 69 near Shakopee when she missed her exit. The truck driving fast behind her motioned for her to pull over. She did and the driver got out of his truck and started yelling at her. She then got out of her vehicle to try to apologize. That is when the unidentifed man smashed Jennifer's cell phone, picked her up and threw her onto the busy interstate. Fortunately she was not hit and several Good Samaritans stopped to help. One used their car to block traffic while another picked her up off the road and carried her to safety.

The man sped off in his truck but nobody got his license plate number, said Capt. Greg Muelken of the Scott County Sheriff's office. He said witnesses gave varying descriptions of the truck and man, who was in his 40s with graying hair. Anyone who saw or has information about the incident is asked to call the sheriff's office at 952-445-1411. Muelken said Boulden would not be cited.

Muelken advised drivers in a situation with an angry, honking motorist to call for help on a cell phone and not to stop except in a public area with people around. "You don't know what to expect, unfortunately," he said.

Jennifer is suffering from two herniated disks and her back and right leg were also injured. She hopes that the pickup truck driver is found so that she can ask him why he did this to her. The Scott County Sheriff's Office would like to find him as well. Jennifer described him as a white male with light-colored hair. She has said the pickup truck was blue and his passenger was a Native American woman.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Two Injured in Head-on Minneapolis Car Accident

Two people were injured in a late night car accident in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening. Two cars were traveling on Interstate 394, with one driver going the wrong way in the eastbound lanes. They collided head-on and both drivers were injured.

Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Mark Peterson said investigators smelled alcohol on the breath of the wrong way driver.

"Troopers when they were investigating detected alcohol on the breath of the driver traveling the wrong way and that's about as much as we can go at this point in time," he said. Toxicology tests are being conducted.

Both drivers were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The wrong way driver was listed in critical condition. The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the accident and no charges have been filed. The accident shut down the interstate for a few hours.

If you would like to read more about car accidents, please visit InjuryBoard's Car Accident information page.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Snowstorms Kill 8 in Minnesota

At least 8 people were killed in car accidents that can be blamed on the winter snowstorm over last weekend. The winter storm caused dangerous and icy conditions that made driving hazardous. The accidents happened all over the state of Minnesota. Two people were killed in a car accident on Monday on Interstate 90 near Austin.

They were among at last eight people killed in accidents that authorities linked with this weekend's snowstorms. At least six died Saturday:

_A 17-year-old Oak Grove girl died shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday after losing control of her car and crossing the center line into a pickup truck in Oak Grove, the Anoka County sheriff's office said. Her name was still being withheld Monday.

The victims ranged in age from 17 to 87. It is always important to take care when driving in snowy and icy conditions. Use your best judgement in deciding if you really need to go out in order to avoid a potential accident.

If you would like to learn more about car accidents and how to prevent them, please visit InjuryBoard's Car Accident information page.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Train Derails and Spills Acid, Many Evacuated

On Monday, October 29, a train derailed and spilled hydrochloric acid in Clara City, Minnesota. Hundreds of residents had to be evacuated and many schools had to be closed.

The train struck another train that was parked at about 4 a.m., and at least one car leaked hydrochloric acid, a Chippewa County sheriff's dispatcher said. Burlington Northern Santa Fe representative Steve Forsberg said an estimated 50 or more train cars were derailed.

About 400 people from the area were evacuated to a church and an entire school district had to cancel classes because of the spill.

Hydrochloric acid in high concentrations forms acidic mists. Both the mist and the solution have a corrosive effect on human tissue, potentially damaging respiratory organs, eyes, skin and intestines.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Toxic Substances.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Search For Missing From Bridge Collapse Continues

After a week of searching for victims from the Minneapolis bridge collapse, rescue coordinators have decided to bring in Navy and FBI divers. The local teams have not found the remaining eight people that are missing and believed to be dead, mainly due to very unstable debris and wreckage. In addition to those missing, five people have been confirmed dead and five others are still in hospitals in critical care.

The FBI dive teams brought with them advanced technology to help in the search. One item is a small submarine that includes a robotic arm. Also, workers have begun to move equipment into place to remove the large slabs of concrete and pieces of steel out of the river.

The Navy said that there would not be a spokesperson to comment on their role in recovery until some time on Tuesday.

As the recovery effort enters a new stage, teams of designers and builders are racing to meet a dawn Wednesday deadline for showing they are qualified to bid on the bridge replacement project, which the state has put on a fast track.

Officials want to have find a contractor for the job by September, and have a new bridge built and ready by the end of 2008. Officials realize this is goal is a bit fast, but say that the need for a bridge is an emergency.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano
